Meet our Backyard Chickens!

Raven

Raven is the flock leader after Pingu died and the only original chick we stared with (the others were all roos so had to go to a new home). She is a very pretty frizzle and knows it! As a chick she was the most adventurous, always managing to jump out of the brooder wanting to know what was going on. As a hen she is just the same.

Breed:              Pekin frizzle X
Best Buddy:    Pingu
Quirks:            LOVES anything shiny, beware if you have
                          any earrings/rings in!

Nessie is what I would call the 'bodyguard' of the flock. She looks out for the flock and her leaders and scans for danger and best foraging spots. Her name came about when we got her at 12 weeks old. She was black with lots of chocolate brown flecks all over her, reminding us of a chocolate bar.

Breed:                 Unknown, but I believe there is some Buttercup in her.
Best Buddy:       Erm....bit of loaner but does hang around with
                             Pingu and Raven mostly.
Quirks:               Is a Rooster in disguise! Hates to be picked up or
                             touched!

Nestlé (aka Nessie)

Fae

Fae is fourth in line and the last of the main close group in the flock. You will usually see the top four all hanging around together. Fae is a lovely little Belgian who is very tame and loves to hop onto your lap, especially if you have treats!

Breed:               Belgian X
Best Buddy:    Shares the love between the top four
Quirks:             Loves to be on your lap!

Fiametta is Latin for 'Little Fiery One' and looking at her patterning you can see why. Fia is a very elegant lady with a calm demeanor which shows her age and experience. Being a good year and a half older than the others you can really tell the difference. She is very happy being in the middle of the pecking order, keeping the lower ones in check.

Breed:               Belgian d'Anver
Best Buddy:     DeeDee
Quirks:             Very Chatty!

Fiametta (aka Fia)

Zelda

Zelda is the newest addition to the flock. We purchased her along with Dalek at the Perth Royal Show in 2011. Before coming home with us she managed to come second in the Black Pekin section, I'm so proud! *sniff*
For such a small chook, Zelda is very sure of herself. When we introduced her to the flock she immediately set to asserting her position, even taking on Pingu! That was very quickly shot down by Pingu and now Zelda is sitting nicely in the middle.

Breed:                Pekin
Best Buddy:     Dalek
Quirks:              Small Chook Syndrome!

DeeDees' full name must look a little strange at first, but is very fitting for her. She is a completely black Polish x Araucana except for a few little white feathers on her head like Cruella Deville! The Diva comes from the huge puffy head she has because of the Polish cross. Her Diva look though has declined a little due to her inability to see, so we had to trim around her eyes! She has settled in very well now that she can see, and is a very curious and tame chicken.
Yay for green eggs!

Breed:               Polish x Araucana
Best Buddy:    Fia
Quirks:             Tends to bump into things!

DivaDeville (aka DeeDee)

Amber

Well what can I say about Amber. This chicken has so much personality, even from when she was a chick. Amber is a Hyline and was a spur of the moment purchase from a local City farmers and I'm so glad we got her. She was once at the bottom of the pecking order but since Zelda and Dalek came along she is much happier. She LOVES her food and I mean LOVES it! From jumping up onto our arms as we enter the run door with food to devouring any fruit/veg we put on the hanging hook, she entertains us everyday.

Breed:               Hyline
Best Buddy:     Food
Quirks:             Too many to list!

As soon as we saw Dalek, her colouration and patterning immediately made us think of Daleks (Dr Who). Even though Daleks have no gender, as a hen she needed a girly full name, so Dahlia Lekkströmm was born! We immediately took to her along with Zelda at the Perth Royal Show 2011. She had no fear of us in her cage, constantly dancing from left to right wanting some attention. She had to come home with us! Dalek is the smallest chook we have and is at the bottom of the pecking order. She is a little cautious of the others but is a lovely little girl.

Breed:              Belgian d'Uccle
Best Buddy:    Zelda
Quirks:            Loves to zoom around the run on her little
legs and is an amazing flyer
